EUMOS 40509-2012 is a standard that describes the test method for analyzing and evaluating unit load stiffness.  This test protocol is based on the application of horizontal dynamic forces/accelerations to the unit load in order to evaluate the stiffness of the unit loads. We could say that the stiffer a unit load is, the more stable and safer it will be when transported in a vehicle. Thus, the standard includes a detailed description of the conditions required to perform the test, in addition to the evaluation criteria for measuring the deformation of pallet loads.


How to perform the test

The stability test simulates the horizontal accelerations and decelerations inherent in the distribution cycles of different transport methods. The aim is to predict the damage that may be suffered not only by the load during transport, but also by the collateral damage and accidents that may occur due to a lack of rigidity of the load. The EUMOS 40509:2012 method is thus part of a series of EUMOS tests or EUMOS standards.

One of the procedures of the EUMOS 40509:2012 method can be performed as follows: 

  • The load is placed on the specially designed platform of a horizontal stability tester
  • A uniform acceleration is applied to the platform where the load goes with a duration of at least 0.3 seconds.
  • The change from 0 to steady/uniform acceleration should not take longer than 0.05 seconds. This first step is known as a “jerk” and precedes the next step of 0.3 seconds described above, known as a “dwell”.
  • After the “dwell” acceleration is reached, the platform slowly decelerates until it comes to a stop. This last step is necessary only to stop the platform and therefore it should not be abrupt in order not to affect the deformation obtained in the test, which comes from the two previous steps described.

An alternative method is to accelerate the basket with the load for a sufficiently long period until a certain speed is reached, and then decelerate evenly/constantly for at least 0.3 seconds. Similarly, the change between acceleration and deceleration cannot exceed 0.05 seconds. At the end of the 0.3 seconds of sustained deceleration, the platform comes to a stop.


What kind of tester is required for the EUMOS 40509-2012 test?

To perform the EUMOS 40509:2012 test in the manner described above, a horizontal stability tester is required that is capable of simulating the horizontal accelerations and decelerations produced during the distribution cycle. In this way, it is possible to predict both possible damages to the load and possible damage that may occur during transport, and to study the design of suitable packaging that will prevent damage to the load and will be safe for transport.

  1. The input parameters are set in the software: the client, reference, etc.
  2. The software then displays the recorded images, frame by frame. With just one click, it is possible to know the deformation in the tested load unit. The software also measures the deformation when the load is tilted during the test.
  3. All images can be saved together with the analyzed data.
  4. Once the analysis is complete, the innVision Pro system produces a technical report with all the data collected.
