In 2019, Amazon decided to take a leap forward in standardizing the packaging used by companies that distribute their products over its platform.

This resulted in the development of the Frustration-Free Packaging program, whose objective is to improve the customer experience in relation to packaging, and to guarantee their satisfaction. 

To this end, four requirements were established that must be met by the packaging of those wishing to distribute their products over Amazon:

  • Optimize the packaging material to use as little as possible.
  • Guarantee that the packaging fulfills its protective function and that the product arrives safe and sound to the end customer.
  • Encourage the use of recycled packaging materials.
  • Make opening the package easier.

ISTA 6-AMAZON is therefore a complete packaging testing method that guarantees that companies that distribute their products over Amazon meet these requirements. 

In other words, overcoming the ISTA 6 packaging testing methods implies that the load will be ready for shipping upon arrival at Amazon’s center, and its packaging will not need modification, which implies an additional expense for distribution companies.

Amazon Lab: the solution for testing your Frustration-Free packaging

ISTA 6-Amazon offers a series of simulations that test the packages and the way in which they react to the hazards of the distribution cycle. This way, it is possible to foresee how the packaging will respond to these events in order to optimize it and guarantee that it will perform its function: protect the load within. 

As a response to this new standard, at Safe Load Testing Technologies we have developed our Amazon Lab, a complete solution to perform the ISTA 6-Amazon testing methods. 

Our Amazon device lab is composed of the following machines, all of which fulfill the testing requirements outlined in ISTA 6-Amazon

Drop tester

Free falls and rotational impacts are some of the most common threats to a package’s integrity during the distribution cycle. The Drop Tester that is part of the Amazon Lab can simulate these impacts, including edge and corner drops, thanks to the inclusion of an arm mechanism. 

Moreover, this Safe Load TT machine has been designed for an intuitive use, making the test as simple as placing the load on the elevating surface, selecting the height at which the load should be released on the screen and pressing a button to get the test started.

As part of our policy of enabling the personalization of equipment, we have designed different systems that are suited to each type of load to be transported, and its volume.

Compression tester

Our Compression tester allows a package to be tested against compression forces, and the performance of the creep test. 

This is an essential part of the Amazon Lab and ISTA 6-Amazon tests, since it can verify that the chosen packaging will comply with the Frustration-Free Packaging program and withstand the potential compression related to stacking.

Vertical vibration system

The vertical vibration system simulates the vertical vibrations caused by various types of transports, including rail, air or sea freight, among others. 

As an added value, it is possible to attach our patented Pitch&Roll system to the machine. This is a technology that can simulate the pitch and roll motions that might occur during shipping and handling. In this way, the machine generates the most precise results

Inclined impact tester 

The inclined impact tester, which is also part of our Amazon Lab, allows for simulating the horizontal impacts that might affect the stability of a load during the distribution cycle. 

With an intuitive use and supporting loads of up to 2000 kilograms, it allows for the fulfillment of the ISTA 6 packaging requirements, testing the protective ability of the product+packaging system against inclined impacts.

Clamp tester

The Clamp tester is a specific tool that is used to predict a package’s resistance against the horizontal pressures and vertical motions that are typical in automated warehousing. 

This makes the Amazon Lab the most complete solution on the market to perform the ISTA 6-Amazon testing methods as established by the e-commerce giant. The solutions that comprise this lab can be sold as a set or separately so that each company can complete its laboratory based on its needs.
