In this context, package integrity testing takes on special relevance due to its ability to foresee possible damages derived from the distribution cycle. 

By means of a variety of processes, companies have access to tools to carry out their quality control packaging in order to optimize packaging and avoide unnecessary expenses.

 

Package integrity testing: what is it about

Package integrity testing involves a series of tests and simulations that allow us to foresee the possible damages derived from the distribution cycle for the packaging and the goods being transported. 

In order to carry out quality control packaging, there are different testing equipment and transport simulation technology on the market, which are capable of simulating real transport conditions in order to analyse the protective capacity of the packaging. 

These tests are in many cases linked to international protocols and standards that regulate how to perform tests to ensure the safety of loads. 

Such is the case of the ISTA 6 Amazon.com test method, which has gained special importance in recent years with the increase in online sales. Through the Frustration-Free Packaging Program, Amazon aims to reduce packaging waste as well as the environmental footprint of the whole process. To do this, Amazon suppliers must certify their packaging to ensure that it is designed to reduce waste and protect the product from damage along the supply chain and up to the customer’s door, without the need for additional packaging or preparation by Amazon itself.

For this purpose, at Safe Load Testing Technologies we have designed the Amazon Lab, consisting of 5 teams capable of reproducing ISTA 6-Amazon.com-SIOC and ISTA 6-Amazon.com-OB test procedures, as described in the ISTA standard

To carry out the evaluation of packaging, companies can choose between contracting the services of an external testing laboratory or creating their own. In the latter case, it is possible to choose the necessary equipment to carry out the tests. 

 

Why carry out quality control packaging? 

Package integrity testing gives companies access to a number of advantages:

Tests to perform for evaluation packaging

According to the reality of the distribution cycle, there are different types of testing equipment suited for package integrity testing: 

Horizontal stability testers  

Equipment capable of simulating the horizontal accelerations and decelerations typical of transport to ensure the rigidity and safety of loads. 

In Europe, moreover, companies distributing their products by road and companies transporting goods must comply with Directive 2014/47/EU. In order to comply with this directive, we have designed the equipment of the innSlide family. These include the innSlide Boomerang tester, the world’s most compact solution for acceleration testing in accordance with EUMOS 40509 and US FMCSA load safety requirements. UU., to measure the stability and rigidity of the load.

Testing Equipment for vibrations and movements of pitch and roll  

This equipment is capable of measuring the damage caused by vibrations on packages and the loads being transported. The patented Safe Load TT technology also allows the measurement of pitch and roll movements with the Vibration + Pitch & Roll System.  In addition, using the patented technology of our P&R Module we are able to convert any vertical vibration table, whatever the manufacturer, into an innovative vibration machine with three axes: vertical, roll and pitch. 

Impact testing 

During the distribution cycle, it is very common for packages to suffer different types of blows, both horizontal and vertical, that can affect their content and integrity. In order to prevent such damage, Safe Load TT has developed two systems belonging to the innShock family of products.

Compression tester

Equipment for testing the compressive strength in packaging and creep performance, both in transport containers, pallets and loading units. These solutions are an essential part of characterizing the design of the transported package, in order to determine its correct performance and reduce damage and additional expenses.

Drop tester 

Simulates drops and rotational impacts that can affect packages and products during handling and distribution. This solution is designed to simulate flat, edge and corner drops using the latest technology combined with innovative design.

Clamp tester

A tester designed to measure the protective capacity of the packaging against horizontal pressures typical of automatic storage.
