Up until today, vertical vibration systems had been one of the most widespread tools for packages. However, nowadays regulations are getting more stringent and require more thorough tests that reproduce all kinds of motions. It is for this reason that current machines are adapting their mechanisms to also simulate pitch and roll in package means of transport. For this purpose, there are modules such as Safe Load’s pitch&roll module, which can be adapted to vertical vibration systems so that, in addition to performing vertical motions, they perform others that imitate the pitching and rolling of freight transport such a multi-axis vibration test system.
What benefits does a company obtain by having a multi-axis vibration test system with vertical + pitch&roll?
During transport, goods experience many types of efforts that may affect their contents and their integrity. Some of the most common effects suffered by goods during transport are the following:
- Loading and unloading of the goods.
- Vehicle vibrations.
- The accelerations and decelerations caused during road or railroad transportation.
Therefore, for the companies it is very important in order to be able to predict a load’s behavior during transport, thereby guaranteeing the arrival of the goods in perfect conditions, which is why for years now, the packaging has been subjected to various simulation tests that predict these kinds of problems.
The ISTA association is tasked with establishing the main testing protocols in that regard, and it expects to update its procedures soon in order to include pitch & roll motions into their transportation simulation standards. This is why it is advisable for companies to update their machinery in this regard, so as to be able to have systems that, in addition to performing the vertical vibration, also contemplate the pitch and roll of transportation methods.
There are currently two solutions on the market in this regard: the one by Safe Load TT, who designed and patented the first vertical + pitch & roll vibration system in 2012, and that of Lansmont, who created its own solution in 2017. Both multi-axis vibration systems have three degrees of freedom, being the solutions that come the closest to real conditions.

Even though the solutions on the market have a steep price, Safe Load TT has worked hard to attain a great balance between cost, quality and performance (cost-effective) with its vertical vibration + pitch & roll system. However, at Safe Load TT we are still aware of the expense involved in investing on a full machine, and given that most laboratories already have vertical vibration tables, we have worked on an intermediate solution that allows the existing technology to be taken advantage of.
During the last year, Safe Load TT has developed an independent Pitch & roll module that can be coupled with any vertical vibration table by any manufacturer. This module can be mounted and dismounted on the existing vertical vibration table in less than an hour, which implies a significant time optimization. In this way, you can still use the vertical vibration table, which can be transformed into a vertical + pitch & roll vibration system when required and work as a multi-axis vibration tester.
Safe Load TT has also worked on its design to prevent cargo capacity from being lost. To this end, the shock absorbers of the existing table (if any) are modified, or Air Spring shock absorbers are added, which enable the pitch & roll module to be added without decreasing the test load capacity. Furthermore, Safe Load TT tries to be as least invasive as possible on the existing equipment, since the module has its own hydraulic central and independent controls.
