Vibration test procedure features

A vibration test can reproduce movements during load and unload, vibrations in the vehicle and horizontal accelerations/decelerations incurred in transport by road, plain, train or sea damage and deform packaging inducing safety risks during transportation and handling.

There are different types of vibrations that can be simulated with a transport simulation testing equipment: random vibration, sine sweep vibration, fixed frequency vibration, replication test, etc.

In addition, within simulation tests, it can be found transport simulation tests according with security standards, such as ISTA, EUMOS, ISO or ASTM, which ensure the safety of a product during transportation and storage. Also, there are another kind of test that can be hold in a simulation laboratory using recording devices, such as DR2(link), that monitor all these distribution hazards. Afterwards, these registered routes can be reproduced in a real way with a vertical vibration system for packaging optimization.

Safe Load Testing Technologies has developed three vibration test equipment that performs the simulation of vertical, and pitch and roll vibrations produced during the distribution process.

Pitch & roll module features

Safe Load’s pitch & roll module can be adapted to an existing vibration table in order to simulate not only vibration movements, but pitch and roll movements with a multi-axis vibration tests system as well. That is using the patented technology of a P&R, it is possible to update an existing vertical vibration table in an innovative vibration tester to measure 3 axes: vertical, pitch and roll.

A vertical vibration + pitch&roll system will allow to increase and develop the knowledge of the effects of vibrations on the packagings destined to transport goods. With an accurate information on the levels of vibration registered by a DR2, companies will be able to manufacture and choose packagings whose design offers the greater security in transport by reducing the number of incidents.

Vibration monitoring procedure:

A vertical vibration system reproduces the vertical vibrations suffered by a load during transportation. The vibrations during a trip are recorded(DR2), analyzed and transform to generate a PSD. The PSD(power spectral density), is a transformation from acceleration-time to g2/Hz-frequency. Represents the vibration intensity depending on the frequency.

The vertical vibration system performs a random vibration test according to the values of the PSD inserted.

There are many standard PSD in case the trip is not recorded or know, as example:

According with ISTA Procedure 3A, the breakpoints used are for an Over-the-Road trailer typical parcel delivery movement and shall be programmed into the vibration controller to produce the acceleration versus frequency profile(spectrum) with an overall Grms level of 0.53. The theoretical stroke required to run this vibration profile is 47.12 mm(1.855 in) peak to peak.

Normally, the vibrations that may occur during transportation are random and their range will depend on the means of transport used. The most common frequency range in a distribution cycle is up to 200Hz.

With a vibration test, it is also possible to identify shocks and afterwards reproducing them in a simulation laboratory for packaging optimization.
