This initiative originates from Amazon’s Frustration-Free Packaging program, aimed at promoting efficient home deliveries that minimize excessive packaging while also ensuring easy package opening. The results speak for themselves: since 2015, Amazon has reduced its packaging requirements by 33%.

Since the program’s inception, Amazon has worked closely with various manufacturers to test their packaging. How do the ISTA 6-AMAZON.COM Standards work?

The first step is to determine if the packaging is suitable for specific testing. For this purpose, Amazon uses transportation simulation machines and machine learning to identify other items in its store with similar characteristics.

The main idea is to test Amazon’s distribution network, from moving a package to a fulfillment center to its final delivery at the customer’s doorstep. This helps us understand the maximum strain a package may encounter during fulfillment and delivery. These machines enable our customers to obtain data on the vibrations their products experience and take appropriate actions to optimize their packaging. The goal is to simulate the vibrations of different vehicle types on various road conditions, which can vary in complexity, as well as different sizes and weights of packaging.

Our vibration shaker table is capable of conducting vertical vibrations, replicating both standard and recorded vibrations experienced on actual transport routes. This enables us to recreate the real-world conditions that products encounter throughout the distribution cycle.

Furthermore, our shaker table vibration system is equipped to accommodate the patented Pitch & Roll Module. This module allows us to introduce pitch and roll motions into vertical vibration tests, providing a comprehensive testing solution for a wide range of scenarios.

Drop Challenges

Conducting a drop test provides vendors or manufacturers with the ability to recreate situations where the package undergoes lifting, shifting, and impact with the ground or the truck floor.

Employing specialized machinery, each item is securely gripped and then dropped from various angles. This process ensures that the packaging exhibits sufficient durability to withstand potential drops not only during the fulfillment process but also after delivery.

Our machines ensure the repeatability of these tests, aiming for maximum reliability. Additionally, keeping the end-user in mind, our drop testers can be operated by a user-friendly independent controller. This feature allows for easy command of tests, adjustment of drop height, and control of the hinged fork’s movement up and down.

In 2022, it is estimated that big companies could have faced significant losses, approximately 10 million dollars, due to damages caused by package falls. This situation underscores the critical importance of proper and optimized packaging in the distribution chain. The use of high-quality packaging materials, package designs that better absorb impacts, and careful handling are key aspects to minimize these risks. If the item is large and heavy, it undergoes additional testing. Specifically, it goes through a compression test, which simulates the pressure exerted by other packages that may be stacked on top of it within our fulfillment centers.

Our compression machines are designed to test the compressive strength of packaging and the creep performance of shipping containers, pallets, and unit loads. Loads are exposed to different compressive forces, both vertical and lateral, during handling, automated warehouse storage, and transport.

We must also highlight the unpredictable issues that can arise in a distribution chain, such as when an item might forcefully collide with the wall of a truck, often a result of the driver having to brake suddenly. To address this, it’s vital to have a reliable alternative that offers insights on how to be prepared for such scenarios.
