Acceleration testing procedure
During goods transportation and handling, loads are subjected to many types of movements, amongst them trucks accelerations and decelerations. Acceleration is the name given to any process where there is a change of velocity. Thus acceleration could be measure with acceleration tests, but also with another package testing such as drop tests, stability tests, vibration tests or impact tests.
However, if we take into account constant acceleration, there are two types of package testing: stability testing and acceleration testing. In Safe Load Testing Technologies there are two machines that can perform stability and acceleration tests: horizontal stability tester and horizontal impact & acceleration tester.
Acceleration test regulations. Eumos 40509:2012
Eumos 40509:2012 describes a dynamic test method to evaluate the rigidity and safety of a load unit subjected to horizontal accelerations and decelerations (such as those produced during road transport), including a detailed description of test conditions, evaluation criteria for pallet load deformation, and test certificate specifications.
It consists of the following testing method:
- The load unit to be tested is placed in a cart
- The basket accelerates in the direction of motion with a specific acceleration of k * g for at least 0.3 seconds, and then decelerates.
- The change from a resting situation to the specific acceleration cannot take more than 0.05 seconds.
There is also an alternative method, which consists of accelerating the loading basket for a long-enough period and then decelerating with a specific deceleration of k * g for at least 0.3 seconds. In this case, the change from acceleration to deceleration should also take no more than 0.05 seconds.
According with the Royal Decree 2017/47/EU, a load has to be able to support 0.8g in the travel direction, and 0.5g in perpendicular to the direction of travel.
